Support our troops

Support our troops — Bring them home! What better way to support our troops than by bringing them home to their families before they are wounded or killed? The nature of military action, of course, is that "troops" are asked to sacrifice their bodies and lives for the sake of the conquest. When will we find a better way to create peace in our world? How does asking men and women to kill and to be killed make the world safer?

The war in Iraq has nothing to do with defending our nation. That nation was not threatening to invade or attack the U.S., and it had nothing to do with what happened on 9/11. It was not a "haven for terrorists," as it has now become under our "watch." There were no weapons of mass destruction. We did not go into Iraq to make the world safe for democracy. That reason was given long after the fact of our invasion. We invaded and are occupying another country which did not attack us. And now we are asked to support the idea of other pre-emptive military actions.

Today the generals in charge of the war in Iraq — General Casey and General Myers — said that maybe next year we could start reducing the number of U.S. troops. And President Bush once again asked the nation to "stay the course" without any idea of what that would mean. When we should never have gone into Iraq in the first place, why should we stay any longer? Why do we continue to sacrifice the bodies and lives of our men and women? For what reason?

For those whose moral values are formed by the teachings of Jesus and the Bible, how can we do anything but oppose staying in Iraq? The 10 commandments said, "Do not kill." Jesus said, "Love your enemies." The apostle Paul said, "Love does no harm to another." How can we ask other men and women to kill and to maim, to destroy homes and cities, to sacrifice their jobs, marriages, health, bodies, and lives? How?

Support our troops. Bring them home!
