No one is safe until …

No one in the world is safe until every nation, including the United States, abandons and destroys its nuclear weapons. Hiroshima and Nagasaki were destroyed 60 years ago, killing 300,000 people. 95% of them were civilians. 1300 were children in one school. Since then we engaged in a generation-long "cold war," with two nations threatening the whole world with destruction.

Today the Bush Administration has launched development of a "bunker buster" nuclear weapon. It has refused to abide by treaties which require us to get rid of weapons, not engineer new ones. While we threaten other countries who consider developing nuclear weapons, we continue to keep in readiness more nuclear weapons than anyone and enough weapons to cause widespread death and destruction around the world.

No one is safe until everyone is safe. The United States is 60 years too late in saying to the world, "We will not indiscriminately murder whole populations through nuclear weapons." But we can at least say it for the future — never again! And we can back up what we say by what we do — destroy the weapons we have and refuse to build new ones.
